About Tri Kappa
Kappa Kappa Kappa, Inc. (commonly known as Tri Kappa) is a philanthropic organization that exists only within the boundaries of the state of Indiana. The object of this organization shall be to bring women into close, unselfish relationship for the promotion of charity, culture and education.
The organization was founded on February 22, 1901 by 7 young women, and has grown to nearly 9,000 members, contributing $1.5 million dollars every year to local and state projects. There are 142 active chapters and 110 associate chapters in 12 Provinces. Locally Tri Kappa has chapters in Crown Point, Dyer-Schererville-St. John, Gary-Merrillville-Winfield, Griffith, Hammond, Hobart, Lowell, Munster-Highland, Chesterton, Portage and Valparaiso.
Each chapter functions quite differently under the umbrella of the state organization, therefore, each chapter has a personality all its own. Our sorority is, at this time, an “invitation only” society as it has been since 1901. A potential member must be invited to join by an Active member of her local chapter along with two additional sponsors, all in good standing. The nominee is then voted upon by secret ballot at a regular business meeting. As a result of these rules, the state organization does not recommend anyone for membership to the local chapter.
Tri Kappa members work tirelessly to promote charity, culture and education throughout the state. The members of the Crown Point Gamma Theta Chapter, founded in 1922, have greeted attendees to the Lake County for over 70 years, made and sold over 5000 chocolate Easter Eggs every year since 1989 and biennially host a Kitchen Tour of homes in Crown Point, featuring local chefs and many fine restaurants. Funds raised from these events allow the chapter to donate thousands of dollars to charitable, cultural and educational organizations in Crown Point. Additionally, the 100+ active and associate members provide numerous services to our city, including support to the local food banks, animal shelters and emergency and health care providers.
